Call to Rich Countries: "Develop a Contingency Plan for Loss and Damage"

Faced with the worst impact of global warming, 20 countries have set out proposals for loss and damage compensation. They said rich countries urgently need to develop a plan to help countries ravaged by extreme weather conditions. Developing countries' failure to take early action against the climate crisis has made them increasingly vulnerable. The document revealed by V20 includes proposals to impose unexpected taxes on oil and gas producers or frequent flyers to raise money for the loss and damage fund. Maldives Environment Minister Shauna Aminath said the world's wealthiest nations could help poor countries improve their resilience to extreme weather conditions, for example, by building seawalls or protecting natural flood barriers.
