Egypt Tries to Prioritize Loss and Damage at COP27

Egypt is trying to include the issue of compensation for economic losses from climate disasters in the summit's official agenda. Wael Aboulmagd, Egypt's special envoy to COP27, told reporters that the host country is "making a lot of effort" to ensure that the question of how to compensate countries suffering heavy economic losses from climate disasters is prioritized at the summit. At COP26, held in Glasgow last year, the US and EU rejected countries' calls for funds to compensate for climate-related losses. But as different countries grapple with extreme weather conditions this year, pressure is mounting for "loss and damage" to be prioritized at COP27. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also visited Pakistan in the wake of devastating floods and urged governments to take the loss and damage at COP27 "with the seriousness it deserves."
